Custom CSS: change how Inoreader looks with your own stylesheet

Themes, fonts and densities cover most tastes. If you want more, you can write your own CSS in a text box, and Inoreader applies it on top of the interface so you get exactly the look you want.

The Power user settings in Inoreader with the custom CSS box

What it does

Inoreader comes with light, dark and sepia themes, a choice of fonts and sizes, and a density setting, and most readers never need more. If you do, you can add your own stylesheet in a box under Preferences, and Inoreader applies it on top of the interface on every page of your account. You can narrow the reading column, swap the font, recolor the sidebar, hide a button you never use or make headlines bigger. Whatever the page's markup allows, your rules can change.

The stylesheet belongs to your account, so it follows you to every browser you sign in from and does not affect anyone else. If you clear the box, everything goes back to the standard look.

How it works

  1. Open Preferences and go to Settings, then Power user settings.
  2. Tick Custom CSS, paste your rules into the box and save. The new style applies at once.
  3. Use the browser's inspector to find the selectors of the elements you want to change, and add rules as you go.
  4. To return to the standard look, untick Custom CSS. Your rules stay in the box for later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I change?

You can change anything a stylesheet can reach. That includes the reading font and its size, the line height and column width, the colors of the sidebar and the article pane, the look of headlines, elements you want hidden and the spacing of the lists.

Where do I put it?

Open Preferences and go to Settings, then Power user settings. Tick Custom CSS, paste your rules in the box and save. The stylesheet applies to the web app in every browser you sign in from.

Do I need to know CSS?

A little. The built-in themes, fonts, font sizes and densities need no CSS at all. Custom CSS is for people who can write a few rules and inspect the page to find the right selectors.

Can it break the page?

Only for you, and only until you clear the box. Your stylesheet belongs to your account alone and never affects other accounts.

Does it work in the apps?

No. The iOS and Android apps have their own themes and font settings, and custom CSS applies only to the web app.

Where do I find examples?

The Inoreader community has been sharing stylesheets for years. Search for Inoreader custom CSS to find them, or start with the browser's inspector on the element you want to change.
