Mentions: see which companies, products, places and people each article is about

A keyword matches a word, and a mention matches the company, person or place the word refers to. Inoreader shows you who and what each article is about, so you can see how much coverage a name gets, find the sources that cover it and follow it without the noise of a common word.

What it does

Inoreader reads each new article and recognizes the companies, products, places, public figures and events named in it. These are mentions, and Inoreader lists them at the top of the article, grouped by type. A mention stands for one specific company, person or place, not for a word, so Apple the company is a different mention from apple the fruit. Different forms of the same name, such as UBS and UBS AG, count as one mention. Mentions are recognized in articles written in English, French and German.

When you hover over a mention, a card shows a short description and how many articles mentioned it in the past week. Click View details to open the page of the mention. The Coverage tab shows an AI-generated overview of the recent coverage, a trend line and the latest articles that mention it, both in your own feeds and in all public feeds. The About tab shows a short description, taken from Wikipedia when Inoreader finds the matching entry, the sources that covered it most in the past week and the other mentions that most often appear with it. You can follow any of those sources from the page.

You can also act on a mention. Create a monitoring feed from the page of a mention or from its card, and every new article that mentions it arrives in your account. When you create a rule or a filter, you can choose List of mentions as a condition, so a rule can alert you about every new article on a company and a filter can keep or remove articles by who or what they are about.

How it works

  1. Open an article and find the Mentions line at the top. Click See all to list every company, product, place, person and event in it.
  2. Hover over a mention to see a short description and its coverage in the past week, and click View details to open its page.
  3. On the page of the mention, read the Coverage tab for the trend and the latest articles, and the About tab for its top sources and related mentions.
  4. Click Create monitoring feed to follow the mention, or choose List of mentions as a condition when you create a rule or a filter.
  5. To move the mentions to the bottom of the article or hide them, open the menu next to the Mentions line.

What people use it for

Following a competitor without false matches

When the name of a competitor is also an ordinary word, a keyword search brings in unrelated articles. Follow the company as a mention in a monitoring feed, and you receive the articles about the company and not the others.

Seeing how a story develops

Open the page of a person, a product or an event in the news to see whether its coverage is growing, which sources cover it most and which other names appear with it.

Alerts about the people and places you cover

Create a rule with a mention as its condition, and Inoreader sends you a push notification or an email when a new article in your feeds mentions a public figure, a region or a product you report on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mention?

A mention is a company, product, place, public figure or event that Inoreader recognizes in an article. Each article lists its mentions at the top, grouped by type, and each mention has a page of its own.

How is a mention different from a keyword?

A keyword matches a word wherever it appears. A mention matches the specific company, person or place that the word refers to, so when you follow Apple as a mention, you get articles about the company and not about the fruit.

Which articles have mentions?

Inoreader recognizes mentions in articles written in English, French and German, both in the feeds you follow and in widely followed public feeds.

What does the page of a mention show?

The Coverage tab shows an AI-generated overview, the trend of the past week and the latest articles that mention it, both in your own feeds and in all public feeds. The About tab shows a short description, the sources that covered it most in the past week and the mentions that most often appear with it.

How do I follow a mention?

Click Create monitoring feed on the page of the mention or in the card that opens when you hover over it. The monitoring feed then collects every new article that mentions it. Pro includes 30 monitoring feeds.

Can I move or hide mentions?

Yes. Open the menu next to the Mentions line in an article to move the mentions to the bottom of the article or to hide them. You can change this again under Preferences, Settings, Article contents.
