Podcasts: follow shows, listen in the reader and read the transcript

A podcast is an RSS feed, and Inoreader is where your feeds already are. Follow a show, play an episode in place or in the background, queue the next ones, and read the episode when you cannot listen.

What it does

Podcasts are RSS feeds, which is why a reader is a good place for them. Follow a show by name or by its feed address, and every episode arrives as an article in the feed with the show notes and a player. The player works in place or in the background while you keep reading, and it has speed control, skipping and a queue. In the apps, playback is handed to the system player, so it continues when the phone is in your pocket.

On Pro, every episode comes with four tabs. One shows the description as the publisher wrote it. One holds a transcript, generated on demand, that jumps to the moment you click. One lists the topics the episode covers with their timestamps. The last one has an article written from the transcript, for the episode you want to know about but will not listen to.

Episodes are articles, so the rest of Inoreader applies to them too. You can put shows in folders, filter episodes by title, use rules to tag or forward an episode, and search across show notes and transcripts. The listening queue is shared with articles read aloud by text-to-speech.

How it works

  1. Open Add feed and choose Podcasts. Search for the show or paste its feed address.
  2. Open an episode and press play. You can send the player to the background and keep reading, and it has controls for speed, skipping and pausing.
  3. Queue the next episodes with one click. The queue keeps playing, and you can add text-to-speech articles to it as well.
  4. If you would rather read an episode, open the Transcript, Topics or Article tab under the player.

What people use it for

Everything in one place

Follow shows next to the websites and newsletters on the same subject, so the folder for a topic holds both the articles and the episodes.

Skimming long episodes

Read a two-hour interview as a list of topics with timestamps, then listen to the parts that matter.

Episodes that match a keyword

Add a filter to a show's feed that keeps only the episodes mentioning a guest or a subject, and a rule that saves them to Read later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I follow a podcast?

Open Add feed, choose Podcasts, and search for the show by name or paste its address. The show becomes a feed, and every new episode arrives as an article with the player.

Can I listen while doing something else?

Yes. On the web and in the iOS and Android apps, the player keeps playing in the background while you read or switch apps. You can pause, resume, skip and change the playback speed.

Is there a queue?

Yes. You can add an episode to the listening queue with one click. The queue also takes articles read aloud by text-to-speech, so listening continues from one to the next.

Can I read an episode instead of listening?

Yes, on Pro. Each episode has a Transcript tab, where you can click a passage to jump to that moment, a Topics tab with timestamps, and an Article tab with a written version of the episode.

Do podcasts count as feeds?

Yes. You can put them in folders, filters keep or remove episodes by title, rules tag or forward them, and search finds an episode by its description or transcript.

Does this work with private or paid podcast feeds?

Yes. Any feed address works, including the private addresses that paid shows give their subscribers.
