An article list in Inoreader with company and product names colored by spotlights

What it does

A spotlight colors the words you care about wherever they appear. Create one for your company and its products, another for your competitors and a third for the people you follow, each with its own color. From then on, every headline and every article that mentions them shows those terms in color, in your feeds, folders, saved articles and tags, and inside the article when you open it.

Spotlights change how fast you read, not what you read. Nothing is hidden or reordered, so you still see everything in your feeds, but the articles that matter catch your eye as you scroll past hundreds of others. Each spotlight can be turned on and off, so you can keep a set for a project and switch it off when the project ends.

On Team plans, admins can share spotlights with every member, so the whole team sees the same clients, products or regulations marked in the same colors. Members choose whether to show Team spotlights next to their own.

How it works

  1. Open Automate, then Spotlights, and click Create spotlight.
  2. Name the spotlight, add a description if you like, and pick a color.
  3. List the words and phrases to mark, and set a term to match case when capitalization matters.
  4. Save it, and the terms are colored in your article lists and inside articles straight away.

What people use it for

Following a market at a glance

Give your company, your competitors and your customers a color each, and see who is in the news as you scroll through a busy industry folder.

Reading for a project

Collect the names, products and technical terms of a project in one spotlight, so the relevant passages stand out in long articles.

A shared vocabulary for a team

On a Team plan, an admin creates spotlights for the clients and topics the team covers, and every member sees them marked the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spotlight?

A spotlight is a named group of words or phrases with a color of its own. Wherever one of those terms appears in Inoreader, in a list of articles or inside an article, it is shown in that color.

How do I create one?

Open Automate, then Spotlights, and click Create spotlight. Give it a name and, if you like, a description, pick one of ten colors and list the terms you want marked.

Does a spotlight hide or remove articles?

No. A spotlight only colors the terms it contains and changes nothing about which articles you see. To keep or remove articles by keyword, use a filter.

Can a term match only with the exact capitalization?

Yes. Each term can be set to match case, which helps with short names and acronyms that are also ordinary words.

How do Team spotlights work?

Team admins can make a spotlight visible to all Team members. Each member decides whether to show Team spotlights, and when a term is in both a personal and a Team spotlight, the Team spotlight's color is used.

Is there a limit?

No. Spotlights are free on every plan, and you can create as many as you need and turn each one on or off at any time.
