Read only the articles you want
In a busy feed, only a few articles are the ones you actually want. Set up a filter once to pick them out, and every device you read on shows the same result.
See pricing- ProPro includes 50 filters, and more are available as an add-on.
- TeamTeam and Team Intelligence plans include filters, pooled across the team on plans with shared limits.
Decide once what reaches you
A filter makes a lasting decision about a feed or a folder, and a duplicate filter can also cover your whole newsfeed. Every new article is checked as it arrives, and only the ones that pass reach your reading list.
Keep or remove
A filter either keeps only the articles that match, or removes the ones that do.
Search conditions
Use the conditions you search by: a word or phrase in the title or the content, an author or the article URL. You can combine several.
Duplicate filters
When several outlets carry the same story, a duplicate filter keeps the first copy and hides the others, matched by URL, identical title or nearly identical title.
Filter once for every device
A filtered article never shows up on the web, in the apps or through the API, so every device shows the same list.
Set up a filter
- Open Automate, then Filters, and create a new filter. You can also right-click a feed or folder and choose to filter it.
- Choose the scope, which is one feed or one folder.
- Choose Remove articles or Keep articles, then add the conditions, such as title or content contains, author is, or URL contains. You can combine several conditions.
- To handle duplicates, create a duplicate filter instead and choose what counts as a duplicate: the same URL, the same title or nearly identical titles, with a filter precision for the last one.
- Save the filter. It applies to every new article from then on and syncs to every device.
Use cases
Narrowing a broad feed to one topic
Filter a national newspaper's feed down to the articles that mention your industry, your city or your company. A day of 200 articles becomes five.
Showing each wire story once
Add a duplicate filter to your news folder, and the same wire story from six outlets shows up only once.
Cutting what you never read
Use a title word or an author condition to remove sponsored posts, live blogs, podcast episodes or a columnist you always skip. Your unread count then means something again.
Filters and rules together
Rules act on articles, while filters decide which articles are worth acting on, or reading, in the first place. Together they make up Inoreader's automation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I filter an RSS feed by keyword?
Create a content filter on the feed or folder and choose whether to keep or remove the articles that match. Then add the condition, which can be a word or phrase in the title or the content, an author or a URL. From then on, every new article that matches is kept and the rest are hidden, or the other way round.
What is the difference between a filter and a rule?
A filter decides what you see, because it keeps or removes articles. A rule acts on articles. It can tag, save, forward or translate them, or notify you about them. In short, filters shape the feed and rules do things with it. Many people use both, with a filter to cut the noise and a rule on what is left.
What is a duplicate filter?
A duplicate filter hides an article when an earlier article in the feed, folder or newsfeed it covers has the same URL, the same title or a nearly identical title, whether or not you read the earlier copy. It catches the same wire story published by several outlets, and repeated copies inside one feed.
Do filters work in the mobile apps?
Yes. Filters run on the server, so you see the same filtered feed on the web, in the iOS and Android apps and through the API.
Can I filter a whole folder?
Yes. A content filter applies to one feed or to one folder, and a filter on a folder also applies to every feed you add to that folder later. Only a duplicate filter can cover your whole newsfeed.
How many filters do I get?
The Pro plan includes 50 filters, shared by content filters and duplicate filters in any mix, and more are available as an add-on. Team and Team Intelligence plans include filters too, pooled across the team on plans with shared limits. You can see your usage under Preferences > Billing and usage.
