An article translated in place in Inoreader

What it does

Not all the sources worth following are in your language, and translations let you read them anyway. Press one key to translate an article in place, with its layout, pictures and links kept, and click once to bring the original back. Inoreader supports more than 50 languages and translates on its own infrastructure, so a translation takes seconds.

You can also have a foreign-language feed translated automatically, so that you can read it without thinking about it. Create a rule with the Translate action, and every new article from a feed, a folder or a monitoring feed is translated as it arrives, up to 100 a day, before you ever open it. If you add a filter, only the articles that matter to you are translated. To act on the translation, add a second rule whose trigger is the first one. Inoreader holds the second rule until the translation is finished, so the email, push notification, summary or webhook it sends carries the translated article.

You also decide when the Translate button appears: always, never, or only for articles in languages you have not marked as ones you read.

How it works

  1. Under Preferences, Settings, Article translations, set your preferred language and the languages you read.
  2. Open any article in another language and click Translate article, or press Q. Use the same control to switch back.
  3. To translate a whole feed, create a rule. Set the feed or folder as the trigger, add conditions if you want only some of its articles, and add the Translate article action. To send the translated text by email or to a webhook, create a second rule that is triggered by this one.
  4. Read the translated articles like any others. Search, tags and digests work on them too.

What people use it for

Reading sources in languages you do not speak

Follow local news from a country you work with, the national press of a market or research blogs in another language, and read them as if they were written in yours.

Monitoring across languages

Create a monitoring feed for a brand in all languages and add a rule that translates every match, then a second rule, triggered by the first, that emails the matches to your team. A mention in Japanese or Portuguese then arrives in their inbox already in English.

Learning a language

Read the original and the translation of the same article side by side and switch between them with one click. Narration tracking in text-to-speech is made for this too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I translate an article?

Open it and click Translate article, or press Q. Inoreader translates the article in place into your preferred language, and you can switch between the translation and the original at any time.

Which languages are supported?

More than 50, both as the source and as the target language. You set your preferred language and the languages you read under Preferences, Settings, Article translations.

Can a feed be translated automatically?

Yes. Create a rule with the Translate article action, and it translates every new article from a feed, a folder or a monitoring feed as it arrives, up to 100 articles a day. It is best to translate a filtered feed rather than everything, so that the quota goes to the articles you will actually read.

Can I choose when translation is offered?

Yes. Under Preferences, Settings, Article translations, you can choose to offer the Translate button always, never, or only for articles in languages other than the ones you read.

Is the original kept?

Yes. The translation sits beside the original, and one click switches back to it. The stored article is never changed.

What are the limits?

Free accounts get 10 translations a day. Pro accounts have no limit on manual translations and can have 100 articles a day translated by rules. Unused daily quota does not carry over.
